The footpath ends in a convenient ramp. Perhaps it doesn't leave too much space to negotiate a wheel chair and keep off the main road, but most vehicles pass much closer to the white line in the centre of the carriageway.

The cynics would also point out that that the Highway Authority seems to have specially designed it to line up with the one area of hedge which cars manage to miss when they fail to make the turn. A safety feature?
